Screen-Free Time: Fun Activities to Keep Kids Engaged Without a Device

In a world where screens are everywhere, carving out screen-free time for kids has never been more important, or more rewarding. Whether it's a rainy afternoon or a sunny weekend, here are some of our favourite ways to keep little ones busy, creative, and happy without a device in sight.

1. Get Outside and Explore

Nature is the ultimate playground. Head to your local park, beach, or backyard and let curiosity take the lead. Try a simple scavenger hunt - look for different coloured leaves, bugs, or shapes in the clouds. Pack a hat (a reversible bucket hat works perfectly!) and make a day of it.

2. Get Creative with Art and Craft

Set up a craft station with paper, paint, stickers, and recycled materials. Give kids an open-ended prompt like "build a city" or "design your dream bedroom" and watch their imaginations run wild. No instructions needed - just let them create.

3. Cook or Bake Together

Kids love being involved in the kitchen. Simple recipes like banana muffins, homemade pizza, or fruit skewers are great starting points. It builds confidence, teaches life skills, and the bonus is that you get a snack at the end.

4. Play Old-School Games

Dust off the board games, card games, or head outside for classics like hopscotch, hide and seek, or backyard cricket. These games build social skills and create memories that last far longer than any screen time.

5. Read Together

Set aside 20–30 minutes for reading - whether it's you reading aloud or older kids reading independently. Visit your local library and let kids choose their own books. When kids have ownership over what they read, they're far more likely to engage.

Make It a Habit, Not a Battle

The key to successful screen-free time is consistency and positivity. Build it into your daily routine - even just an hour a day makes a difference. When kids know what to expect, they're less likely to resist and more likely to thrive.

At Little Renegade Company, we're all about encouraging kids to explore, play and be kids. Our range of hats, bags, and accessories are designed to keep up with every adventure - screen-free and otherwise.
